Chapter Nine

Autumn adjusted the peacock feather pin on the side of her blue velvet top hat before putting it on.

Cobie and Baxter sat at her feet, both their little heads cocking inquisitively to one side.

“What?” she asked, adjusting the hat. “No?” It was the only hat that matched, sort of, her cobalt-blue and white polka-dot dress. “It’s a perfectly appropriate hat. After all, we are going to a tea party.”

Cobie’s tail wagged.

“Well, I’m glad you approve.” She shrugged. “There’s no time to go back and change now, anyway.”

Baxter barked.

“I’ll take that as a compliment.” With a dog lead in each hand, they set off across the gravel parking lot to the elaborate wrought-iron gates leading to Crossvine Creek’s Botanical Garden. Because of the generous continued support of one of Crossvine’s founding families, the small town had a botanical garden to rival those found in larger cities. It was one of the things that had drawn her mother here. And where her mother had gone, her father had followed.

The late afternoon sun was truly downright warm, the promise of spring hanging on every bud and blossom they passed as they made their way to the small lake that Crossvine Creek fed into, deep in the heart of the gardens.

Two large white tents had been erected about fifty yards apart, with several seating arrangements placed between. From dainty white iron tables and chairs closest to the refreshments tent, to a string of Adirondack chairs along the waterline, there were plenty of places for the garden party attendees to visit.

“You see those balls?” she said to the dogs. “Those are for the croquet tournament. You cannot chase them.”

Neither dog acknowledged her.

“Besides, they’re made of wood,” she added. “If you’re really good, I’ll take you both out to the lake. I guess I should have asked Noah if you can swim, huh, Baxter?”

The little dog had no answer.

“Autumn.” Harley came out of the tent where the silent auction items were arranged. “Look at you. Love the hat.”

Autumn nodded. “Cobie approved.”

“What else matters?” Harley laughed. “Your painting already has some bids.”

“Really?” Autumn followed her sister inside, the two of them pausing to inspect each and every item that was up for auction. From baskets full of home-spa treats to a week-long stay at a lodge on Lake Tahoe, framed autographed sports jerseys to tickets to a Broadway show, a year-long membership to a local gym to a year’s worth of monthly pet grooming appointments, there was something for everyone.

“Oh, I should put our name down, shouldn’t I?” she asked Cobie.

Cobie wasn’t excited. Her yawn ended with a soft whine and she made a huge show of stretching.

“Are you trying to tell me you’re bored?”

“We have been poking around in here a half an hour,” Harley said. “They’re both being so good, I’d say they deserve a walk.”

“Does that mean you’re coming with me?” She held out Cobie’s leash. “As a good auntie would?”

Harley took the leash. “Are you going to bid on anything?”

“I don’t know.” She shrugged.
